There are two ways to pronounce ‘th’ in English:
θ This is a soft sound, as in think.
ð This is a harder sound, as in this.

Say the word out loud. Is it a silent “th” or is it voiced?
Voiced sounds, ð, make a vibration in your throat. Put your hand on your throat and feel the sound.
Unvoiced sounds, θ, do not make a vibration in your throat. Unvoiced sounds are air only, no vibration. I read that you can put a small strip of paper in front of your mouth and say the sound. If it is air only, unvoiced, the paper will be blown away from your mouth.

Good tip, Cathleen. Another way is to ask students to hold their palm in front of their mouth when saying the word. They’ll feel a flow of air with an unvoiced word, then hopefully know they’re pronouncing the ‘th’ unvoiced and thus correctly.
