“Along” to express direction, position
Along is a preposition and has more than one meaning.
Along to express direction
We use along to show movement in a line next to things which are long and narrow; these include
- rivers
- roads
- corridors.
Here are some examples:

We also use along to express position. The definition is ‘in a line, next to something’.
Again, this means next to things which are long, such as roads, rivers, etc.
- There were many watchtowers along the Great Wall of China.
