| We use I / you / we / they + the basic form of a verb: |
| I |
like |
sport. |
| You |
read |
lots of books. |
| We |
live |
in a big city. |
| They |
work |
in London. |
In the third person (he, she, it) we ad ‘s’ or ‘es’
| We use he / she / it + the basic form of a verb + 's': |
| He |
likes |
sport. |
| She |
reads |
history books. |
| It |
costs |
a lot of money. |
| The sun |
warms |
our planet. |
| When we use he / she / it, we need to add 'es' when the basic verb form ends in -ch or -sh or -ss: |
| I wash ⇒ he, she, it washes |
He washes his car a lot. |
| I finish ⇒ he, she, it finishes |
She finishes work at 5 o'clock. |
| I watch ⇒ he, she, it watches |
She watches television every evening. |
| I teach ⇒ he, she, it teaches |
My mother teaches at a school. |
| I pass ⇒ he, she, it passes |
The bus passes the cinema and the church. |
When to use ‘ies’
| With some verbs ending in -y, we change the ‘y’ to ‘ies' when we use he / she / it: |
| I fly ⇒ he, she, it flies |
My father flies to Paris very often. |
| I try ⇒ he, she, it tries |
Tom tries hard at school. |
| I study ⇒ he, she, it studies |
David studies at University. |
Be careful!
When a verb ends in -ay, -uy, -oy or -ey, the 'y' doesn't change to 'i':
- I play ⇒ he plays
- I buy ⇒ he buys
- I enjoy ⇒ he enjoys.
| We use -es with do and go after he / she / it: |
| do |
+ es |
He does a lot of sport. She does the shopping once a week. |
| go |
+ es |
She goes to the cinema. The train goes very fast. |
