Confusing words: fun vs. funny. What’s the difference?

What’s the difference between fun and funny?

A lot of learners confuse these two words. Try thinking of it like this:

FUN means ‘enjoyment’ or ‘a good time’ and makes you SMILE.

Something FUNNY makes you LAUGH.

Fun

Fun is a noun.

  • I really enjoyed the trip to the amusement park – it was a lot of fun.
  • Have fun on your birthday!

Funny

Funny is an adjective. When someone or something is funny, you laugh.

  • He’s very funny. He makes me laugh.
  • The joke wasn’t very funny – nobody laughed.

Here’s a quick YouTube video with some nice examples of fun and funny. At the bottom of this page you can test yourself with a short quiz.
