Elementary grammar exercise: present simple with ‘always’, ‘often’, ‘never’

This exercise gives you practice talking about frequency in the present tense.

The theme of the exercise is public transport.

present simple exercise transport

When we speak about frequency in the present, we mostly use the present simple tense.

Some of the words we use to say how often we do something are:

  • always, often, usually, never.

This is where we put those words in a sentence:

Adverbs of frequency in the present simple:
always, often, usually, never
We put always, often, usually and never before the main verb:
He always plays golf.
He often plays golf.
He usually plays golf.
He never plays golf.

Be careful!

When the main verb is be (am, is, are), we put always, never, etc. after the verb:

  • I am always happy.
  • He is always late.
  • It is sometimes very cold in Africa.

Excercise number 4 “Sometimes we take the bus, other times we walk.” is an exception, as it doesn’t respect the rule: “We put always, often, usually and never before the main verb.”.
